8/30/2023 0 Comments Noise gate settings for vocalsI discovered that years ago when doing a bit of commercial music for The Movie Channel. The lack of hiss inherent in the digital medium is one reason it's harder to get a good sounding mix with PT than with analog tape. Usually, digital recordings need all the background noise they can get. Otherwise, leave it alone or you may end up with a sterile or mechanical sounding mix. If the noise is found to be bothersome in the mix, then use a gate to reduce it a dozen dB or so, attack ~ 1 ms, release ~ 300 ms. Better yet, get the opinion of someone who hasn't heard the tracks yet at all. Then listen as subjectively and holistically as possible to the overall sound. I would suggest doing the full mix first.
